St Michaels GAA Notes
3rd October 2021
U 13 Boys
All roads led to Strokestown on Saturday last as our under 13 boys combination took on the unbeaten Kilglass Gaels/St Barry's in the Division Two Championship Final. Our opponents were strong favourites having defeated all-comers (including our lads) by sizeable margins throughout the season. However, the boys from north Roscommon were not travelling just to make up the numbers.
A large and appreciative crowd witnessed a titanic struggle between two superbly prepared teams. Kilglass/Barrys edged the first quarter by 3pts to 1 and when they added a couple more points shortly after the water break, one feared they would take a stranglehold on the game. But St Michael's/St Ronan's did not read the script and proceeded to seize the initiative, narrowing the gap with three points on the trot, and then leapfrogging into the lead with a goal. A point from the favourites before the interval reduced our advantage, 1-4 to 6pts at half-time.
The third period was tight and tense with defences on top. No quarter was asked nor given and the only addition to the scoreboard came just before the 2nd water break - a goal for Kilglass/Barry's. When play resumed for the 4th quarter, they added two more points to stretch their lead to four with 10 minutes remaining. Our boys dug deep once again, drawing level with a goal and point, and setting up a thrilling finish. With all the momentum, we pushed forward in search of the winning score, but in the dying minutes, a swift counter attack resulted in a goal, and the title, for the east Roscommon side. An insurance point followed and the final whistle yielded immense disappointment for our young heroes who had given their all. Full-time: St Michael's/St Ronan's 2-5 Kilglass Gaels/St Barry's 2-9.
Congratulations to Kilglass/Barry's on their victory and commiserations to our panel and management of whom we are justifiably proud. It has been another tremendous campaign, with improvement evident throughout the panel. Thanks to the dedicated team of coaches for their time and expertise, to the players for their commitment, and to the parents for their support and encouragement.
