16 Shield Winners
Orchard Park Elphin was the setting for the under 16 shield
final between St Michael's and Castlerea on Sunday. The clubs had shared the
spoils in two previous meetings in 2019 and a close contest was expected. The
boys from Ardcarne got off to a great start with a quick goal and built on this
to lead by 1-6 to nil after 15mins.
Castlerea eventually broke free from the
stranglehold and created an excellent opportunity for a goal themselves only to
be denied by an impressive full-length diving save. Two Castlerea points to
open their account were then followed by two from St Michael's. Another
Castlerea point and goal drew a quickfire response in the form of a St
Michael's goal. The two sides then shared a point apiece before the break with
St Michael's also kicking five wides on the trot in this period. Half-time: St
Michael's 2-9 Castlerea 1-4.
It was Castlerea who made the perfect start to the second half with a goal to reduce the deficit to five. St Michael's tried to respond but were frustrated by three disappointing wides. A dangerous Castlerea move was stopped only at the expense of a penalty which yielded another goal. Two Castlerea points followed to level the scores with a quarter of the game to play.
St Michael's eventually got their first point of the second half to retake the lead. However more Castlerea pressure yielded a free and another equalizer. The boys from north Roscommon surged forward again in a bid to restore their lead but kicked two more wides. With five minutes left and excitement at fever pitch, Castlerea broke away dangerously and looked certain to score a decisive goal but were thwarted by a brave block from the St Michael's goalkeeper and the quick reactions of the defence who pounced on the rebound. Relieved by this let-off, the Ardcarne lads drove forward once more and regained the lead with a point. A loud cheer greeted a goal from the last kick of the game which increased the margin of victory to four. Full-time: St Michael's 3-11 Castlerea 3-7.
Panel: L Liddy-Hill, S Moran, N McGlynn, G Moore, J McGarry, R Henry, C Burke, G Corcoran (1-3), C Guckian, J Lane (0-5), B O'Connor (0-1), D Bakare (1-0), H Bruen (0-1), K Keaveny , B Monahan (0-1), C Regan (1-0), D Regan, L Kearns, J McGarry.
Congratulation and huge thanks to the under 16 squad for all their hard work and dedication throughout 2019 which was capped off with some silverware. Thanks also to the parents for their support during the year and to our sponsors Ardcarne Garden Centre.
