Minor Meeting
Final Minor meeting of the year will be held in the complex at 9pm on Thursday 7th November. It is important we get representation from all teams and appropriate club functions.
Under 14 Boys Semi Final
Our under 14 boys sponsored by McGuinness Centra welcomed Castlerea to sunny Ardcarne Park on bank holiday Monday for the shield semi-final. The home side were quickly into their stride and built a commanding 3-11 v 1-2 lead at half-time. There was to be no easing off in the second half as the lads delivered their most impressive team performance of the year so far. Full-time: St Michael's 9-17 Castlerea 3-5.
Under 14 Boys Final
The under 14 shield final took place on Sunday afternoon in Elphin. Oran, who had won the two previous games between the teams in 2019, provided the opposition. St Michael's got off to the perfect start and were two goals and a point to the good inside five minutes. However Oran settled, got on top in the middle third, and were back on level terms after fifteen minutes at 2-2 apiece. Defences dominated the remainder of the half with just four points shared evenly leaving the sides all square, 2-4 each at the break.
St Michael's were first off the mark after the resumption with a pointed free, and after swapping points, a well-worked team goal increased their lead to four. Oran responded with a point, and a powerful shot to the corner of the net tied the match at 3-6 with twenty minutes to go.
The Ardcarne lads then went for the jugular and some slick passing movements yielded three goals in a golden five minute spell. Despite this setback Oran rallied in the last quarter. Two points and a goal reduced their deficit to four as the game entered the last five minutes. With tension mounting, St Michael's broke the siege and surged forward for a crucial breakaway goal. Another insurance score followed with Oran grabbing a late consolation. Full time: St Michael's 8-7 Oran 5-8.
Panel: L Kearns, T Gilboy, I Morahan, C Regan, J McGarry, N McGlynn, D Bakare, B Monahan (1-0), J Oates (5-2), R Henry (0-5), D Regan, N Fahy, S O'Dowd (1-0), A Oates (1-0), E O'Connor, E Clancy, L Callaghan, R Guckian, O Beirne, E Smyth.
Congratulations to all the panel, their coaches and many thanks to the parents and families for their support all year.
Under 12 Boys
All roads led to Ballyfarnon on Saturday morning for an eagerly anticipated under 12 Division 2 final between local neighbours, St Michael's and Shannon Gaels. Just two points separated the sides in favour of the Croghan lads earlier in the season and another close affair was expected between two strong, skilful and evenly-matched teams. A large crowd turned out and they were treated to a fine sporting game.
Aided by the breeze in the first half, St Michael's started brightly and were three points up inside five minutes. Play ebbed and flowed throughout the half with the Ardcarne boys gradually edging further ahead to lead 11-3 at the break.
Shannon Gaels worked tirelessly throughout the second period to reduce the deficit but every score was matched with a response from the determined Michael's lads.
The final whistle drew applause from all quarters with both clubs proud of their team's efforts.
St Michael's were deserving winners on a 17-8 scoreline, adding the division 2 summer title to the division 3 spring league won earlier this year.
Our under 12 Division 5 squad returned to Ballyfarnon on Sunday afternoon for their Cup semi-final against a strong St Barry's team. Our young boys who have thrived in this competition, improving with every outing, gave another terrific account of themselves, just falling short on the scoreboard and having to settle for 3rd place in the league.
Congratulations to the entire 28-strong under 12 panel and their coaches on their exploits this year.
