MINOR LEAGUE FINAL
Croghan was the venue on Wednesday
evening for the Minor Division 3 League Final between St Michael's-St Ronan's
and Elphin-Ballinameen. On a very warm evening for football, our boys were
quick to settle with two early points from play. Their opponents grew into the
game and had levelled by the end of the first quarter. Another two point salvo
restored our advantage with 10 minutes of the half to play but, at the
interval, the sides were tied again at 4pts apiece.
On the resumption, two pointed frees
were shared in quick succession before Elphin-Ballinameen jumped into the lead
for the first time with a goal. Four more unanswered points followed before the
water break and the 7pt deficit looked insurmountable for our lads entering the
final quarter. However a superbly finished goal from Ruadhan Henry was the
spark that reignited the contest. Two points further narrowed the gap as the
boys seized the initiative. The comeback seemed complete when Caolan O'Connor
finished to the net with 2 minutes remaining to lead by a point. However in a
dramatic finale, the concession of an injury time goal proved decisive.
Full-time: St Michael's-St Ronan's 2-7 Elphin-Ballinameen 2-9.
Commiserations to the boys and their
coaches. They have had a superb league campaign, improving with every outing
and can look forward to the championship in the summer. Thanks to the huge
number of followers who turned out to support the boys.
