Volleyball & St. Michaels
St. Michael’s players renew opposition in volleyball with Elphin players
winning out.
Before COVID, 3 St Michaels players found themselves on opposite sides
in the Irish National cadette A schools final.
On that occasion, Seán Moran was on the winning Drumshanbo team although
Colin Burke and Luca Hill were Elphin’s stars.
Last Wednesday, in the first return to volleyball since COVID the top 8
schools converged in Limerick to fight all the way for the National Senior A
title. Luka and Colin again starred, as Elphin won their opening games 25-9
25-9 and topped their group by beating Athenry 25-17.
In the quarters they beat Bettystown, Meath and faced Drumshanbo in the
semi-final. Seán Moran and many of his classmates had graduated from Drumshanbo
but St. Michaels now had Cathal Guckian starting for the Leitrim School.
Finally, Luka and Collin shared with their teammates a first competitive win
over their neighbours. They also won the first set in the final and, though
losing, they were the first Elphin team in the Senior A final since the Fintan
Cregg led team in 2008, 14 season ago.
Well done to both Luka and to Cathal whose team were much more
successful than they had been as pre COVID juniors 3 years ago.

Students
Congratulations to our students who have represented their
secondary schools so well in many various activities this term, both sporting
and academic. Special mention to Colin Burke, Luca Hill and Bryan O'Connor who
lined out for Elphin Community School on Wednesday in Limerick in the All
Ireland Schools Volleyball 'A' Championship, losing narrowly in the final, and
also played in the Roscommon Schools Final in the Air Dome in Bekan on recently.
Happy New Year, wishing you all a very happy, healthy and sporting 2022.
