Paddy Moran

March 14th 2021 marks the hundredth anniversary of the execution by hanging of Paddy Moran, a native of Crossna, in Mountjoy Jail, Dublin.

Apart from his activities as an Irish Volunteer in the War of Independence, he was also an active trade unionist becoming National President of the Barmen’s Union in 1920. He was also a member of Conradh na Gaeilge and the GAA. He liked nothing better, on his frequent visits home, than to go to Fryre’s field (beside Donnellans) with the Crossna lads and pass on the skills, he was learning in Dublin, to them. He played in Dublin with the Grocers Assistants and with Marlboro Rangers and won medals with both clubs.

He founded a GAA club in Dun Laoghaire, called Dunleary Commercials, and one of its teams played in Croke Park on Bloody Sunday (21-11-1920) before the challenge match between Dublin and Tipperary during which an attack by the British Crown Forces caused the deaths of fourteen people with many more seriously injured. The Dunleary Commercials amalgamated with the Foxrock Geraldines to become the Geraldines P Moran GAA, a club that is vibrant to this day.

When allowed and safe to do so, we hope to welcome Geraldines P Moran GAA Club, Dublin to Ardcarne Park for a game in honour of Paddy Moran.

In 1956/57 St Michael’s and St. Ronan’s got together to form a senior team which was named Paddy Moran’s in his memory.

We remember Paddy with pride and pray for his eternal rest.

In the 100 years since, the Moran (and Sheerin)

family continue to be very much involved with St. Michael's GAA club.

We remember all Paddy Moran's relatives, as his courageous actions and sad death is still very much remembered, particularly at this time.
