Under 14 Boys - Division 2 Championship
Semi-final:
Friday night lights in Ballyforan was the perfect theatrical
setting for a dramatic championship semi final between a highly-rated St
Aidan's side and an ever-improving St Michael's team. The game started at a
brisk pace with play flowing from end to end. The sides were tied at 2 points
apiece after ten minutes when the home team began to assume control on the
pitch and on the scoreboard. They moved 8 points to 2 in front by the 20th
minute and when their midfielder crashed a low shot into the net in the 25th
minute, St Aidan's held a daunting 1-9 to 3pts advantage. Perhaps stung into
action by this setback, the visitors responded with a couple of points before
the interval to trail by 1-9 to 5pts at half-time.
St Michael's emerged for the second half with a determination
to get back into the contest. They immediately seized the initiative and poured
forward in droves. They were rewarded with a goal after three minutes of the
half and another after seven to reduce the gap to a single point. When a third
goal arrived a minute later, the match had been turned on its head. At the
water break signalling the end of a remarkable third quarter, the north
Roscommon boys were up by four, 3-7 to 1-9. If there was any thoughts of the
visitors' momentum being interrupted by the break in play, they were quickly
dispelled by a fourth St Michael's goal shortly after the resumption. The
stunned home team did not go down without a fight and a goal from a penalty
with five minutes remaining reduced the gap to 4pts. Our lads were not to be
denied, however, and secured their place in the championship final next weekend
with a series of points from play. Full time: St Michael's 4-11, St Aidan's
2-10.
The under 14 panel and management team have had an excellent
campaign so far and we wish them all the best in the final against the combined
Eire Og / Michael Glaveys side.
