St Michaels & Volleyball
This Wednesday two under age St.
Michael's players Colin Burke and Luca Hill are expected to be a third of the
starting 6, when Elphin Community College appear in their first National Cadet
Final in schools volleyball since Roscommon senior footballer Fintan Cregg
played with them in 2005. Hot favourites to meet them in the final is
Vocational School Drumshanbo. On this school team is their St. Michael's
club-mate Seán Moran.
So it is very likely that three St.
Michaels players will line out to start next Wednesday in NUIG Galway.
The last St. Michaels players in a
final before Seán last year were Michael Foley and Shane Gillespie in 2011. The
last time St. Michaels players were on the winning side was in 2004. Fresh from
representing Ardcarne in the Community games final, three St. Michaels players
played on the winning Drumshanbo team of that year: Daniel McGonigle, Timmy
Malone and Michael King.
Drumshahanbo and Elphin have never
played against each other in a final.
Volleyball was introduced into the mid
Leitrim/North Roscommon area exactly 50 years by long term Keadue resident Padraig
Noone. Padraig of course, back then was playing for St. Michaels! Best of luck to both teams and thank you to John King for the information!
