 St Michaels Notes

6th August 2023

JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP
Croghan was the venue for our men's opening game in this year's Junior Football Championship on Sunday afternoon against Ballinameen. Playing with the aid of a stiff breeze, St Michael's (sponsored by Joe Simon Home, Garden & Build) got a tonic start with a goal from Alan O'Hara after five minutes. Thereafter, the game remained tight with defences on top and our lads held a narrow 1-2 to 3pts lead as half-time approached. However, three points in as many minutes, followed by a goal from Fiachra Henry, put a much better complexion on the scoreboard at the interval: St Michael's 2-5 Ballinameen 3pts. Another Alan O'Hara goal shortly after the resumption appeared decisive, but it was cancelled out five minutes later by a major score from Ballinameen. From then on, points were shared evenly by both sides until St Michael's finished with a flourish, scoring 2-2 without reply in the closing minutes, Cathal Guckian and Tomas Regan netting the goals. Full-time: St Michael's 5-11 Ballinameen 1-8. Well done to the team and management on an excellent result. Next up is a visit to Tulsk on Friday 18th August at 7.30pm.

UNDERAGE BOYS
The u14 Division 2 team had another thrilling championship contest last week in Abbey Park, Boyle, with a late goal from the home side eventually snatching the spoils. Final score: Boyle 4-8  St Michael's-St Ronan's 3-9. This week, the Division 4 side are in action against Kilglass Gaels-St Barry's at 12.30pm on Sunday 13th in Ballyfarnon. Well done to the Under 16 Boys who enjoyed two fine results last week. On Monday in wet and windy Ballyfarnon, the Division 2 team had a tremendous first half tussle with the visitors from St Aidan's, and led by 2pts at the break. However, a dominant performance after the interval with the wind at their backs secured the win on a final scoreline of St Michael's-St Ronan's 3-13  St Aidan's 1-4. Then on Friday the Division 4 side made the long trip to Woodmount and emerged victorious again. Full time: St Michael's-St Ronan's 4-8  Padraig Pearses 6pts. This week the Division 4 team play St Faithleach's at 7.30pm on Tuesday 8th and Kilmore-Shannon Gaels at 7pm on Friday 11th, both in Ballyfarnon. Best of luck to all our teams and their coaches. LGFA
Well done to our underage Girls teams, all of whom enjoyed victories last week! On Tuesday, a youthful u16 side had 2pts to spare over St Croan's, winning by 4-3 to 1-10. On Thursday, a strong first half showing was the key to the u19 Girls securing the points in Tulsk against the home side:  St Mary's Tulsk 4-7  St Michael's-St Ronan's 6-12. Finally on Friday, the u14 Girls opened their championship campaign with a hard-fought victory over Eire Óg on a 6-2 to 3-8 scoreline. This week the u16 Girls play their championship quarter-final against Castlerea in Ardcarne Park at 7pm on Tuesday 8th while the u19 Girls play Four Roads away at 7pm on Thursday 10th. Best of luck to both teams. DADS & LADS
