Club Notes September 13th 2020

Junior Men

We face Western Gaels in the Junior A Championship Quarter Final on Sunday next September 20th in Abbey Park at 12.30pm. Best of luck to the team and management

Under 14 Boys

Our under 14 boys sponsored by McGuinness Centra completed the group phase of their Division 2 championship campaign on Monday evening last with a short trip to Abbey Park to play Boyle. The visitors held the upper hand in terms of possession and territory during the first half but Boyle's defence put up a stubborn resistance and they only trailed by 4 points at the interval, St Michael's 1-6 Boyle 5pts. Encouraged by their first half showing, the home team dominated the third quarter but scores did not come easily. A goal shortly before the water break put Boyle in front by a point. However, St Michael's response in the last quarter was swift and decisive. 1-5 in five minutes without reply settled the issue with scores shared evenly from there to the final whistle. Full time: St Michael's 2-15 Boyle 1-11. Well done to the team and management who now sit in 2nd place in Division 2 and can look forward to the knockout stages with confidence.
Minor Boys

Our minor boys sponsored by Ardcarne Garden Centre took on a strong Elphin-Ballinameen combination in the Division 2 championship on Wednesday last. The lads started brightly and lead twice in the early stages, but greater economy in front of goal saw the home side in front by 5 points to 3 as the 2nd quarter got underway. A fortuitous goal when a point effort rebounded off an upright was a major setback to the visitors' hopes. The home side quickly capitalized on their momentum to put the game beyond our reach. St Michael's never gave up the fight but their season concluded in a 2-13 to 8pts defeat. Thanks to the players and team management for their commitment during 2020. The truncated competition format was merciless but the season will still stand to the squad as they advance to adult football in the years to come.

LGFA

Well done to our under 12 girls who beat St, Marys in the Section 3 County Final, a great achievement.

Club Notes September 6th 2020

Junior Men

Hard luck to our Junior Men who play St. Brigids in Ardcarne Park on Saturday last, after a great game of football the final score was St. Michaels 1-10 St Brigids 2-09.

A sign of the Covid times, watching the Junior Game from afar!

Under 12 Boys

Our u12 boys team travelled to Orchard Park, Elphin on Saturday last to take on Kilbride in the Division 2 final hoping to repeat their triumph in the same competition in 2019. In damp and breezy conditions, our lads started brightly and dominated possession and territory during the first quarter. At the water break St Michael's deservedly lead by 5 points to 2. A more determined Kilbride side appeared on the resumption. Their defence worked hard to stifle our attack and by half time the sides were level at 5 points apiece. Aided by the breeze, Kilbride seized the initiative with a quick burst of points after the interval. Our boys continued to give their all but scores were hard to get. At full time Kilbride were worthy winners on a scoreline of 14 points to 8.
Regardless of this result, the panel and management have had an excellent season and a bright future. Thanks to the team mentors, Brian Lee, Michael Casey, Gary McDonagh and Thomas Morahan. Panel: Ryan Moran, Peter Walsh, Alex Moore, Peter Morahan, Tom Robertson, Aaron McDonagh, Alex Oates, Cormac Lee, Darragh Lee, BrĂon O'Dowd, Jack Regan, Brion Dowd, Sean Henry, Conor Cryan, Josh Casey, Tyler Meehan, Oliver Neary, Conor Regan

Under 14 Boys

Good luck to our u14 boys who look to continue their winning championship run in Division 2 on Monday 7th in Boyle.

Under 16 Boys

Our under 16 boys, sponsored by Ardcarne Garden Centre, welcomed St Ciaran's to Cootehall last Monday for the final game in the group phase of their championship. The sides went score for score in the opening stages and were tied at 1-3 each shortly after the first water break. A couple of goals and a point in quick succession then saw the visitors move 7 points clear. However the home team showed great character to reduce the gap to a minimum at the interval with a series of fine points. Half time: St Michael's 1-9 St Ciaran's 3-4.
An excellent team goal following a move which spanned the length and width of the pitch pushed our lads in front when play resumed. Another home goal before the water break looked decisive. However the visitors never gave up and scored the last five points to snatch a draw, 3-13 each. This was another encouraging performance at home by a very young and skillful squad.
Panel: Daniel Regan, Niall McGlynn, Daniel Bakare, Iollan Morahan, Kyle Keaveny, Colin Burke, Shane O'Dowd, Cathal Guckian, Barry Monahan, Cormac Regan, Ruadhan Henry, Jeffrey Oates, Eoin O'Connor, Sean Moran, Bryan O'Connor, Luke Kearns, Ronan Guckian, Edward Clancy, Tommy Lennon.

Minor Boys

Best wishes to our minor boys who play Elphin-Ballinameen in Division 2 on Wednesday 9th in what is effectively a championship quarter final.

*New Covid-19 Restrictions:*

While the new Government restrictions on outdoor sports (banning spectators from games and limiting training to pods of 15 including coaches) are very disappointing from a sporting and social point of view, they serve as a warning that Covid-19 remains a threat to society and that we must continue to maintain all best practice protocols to ensure life is as normal as possible.

One positive is that our players are still allowed to play. To ensure that our games may continue, we ask all club members and supporters to respect the new restrictions banning spectators until Sept 13th. We note that, for underage games, one parent/guardian per player is allowed to attend in a child welfare capacity.

Thanks to all for your support and co-operation.
