30th August 2020

Club Notes August 30th 2020

Junior Men

Best of luck to the men who take on St. Brigids in Ardcarne Park on Saturday evening September 5th at 5pm.

Under 12 Boys

Our under 12 boys travelled to Orchard Park on Sunday afternoon to take on Elphin-Ballinameen in the Division 2 semi-final. The home team had struck with four late points to take the spoils in the sides' league meeting at the beginning of August and another close contest was expected. The visitors started brightly and monopolized possession during the opening quarter. However, at the water break they only lead by 4 points to 2. Our lads then opened up a three point advantage as half-time approached but a couple of late scores by the hosts reduced the gap to the minimum and we only lead 6-5 at the changeover. A determined home team emerged for the second half and they quickly jumped in front. Play ebbed and flowed for the remainder of the half with defences on top. St Michael's took the lead as the game entered injury time but a late equalizer tied the score at 9 points each and forced 20 minutes of extra time. Despite falling behind in the first minute of extra time, St Michael's boys rallied strongly and a series of fine scores left them 14-10 to the good at the interval. The home side never gave up and twice reduced the deficit to just 2 points, but the visitors would not be denied and were still on top when this titanic sporting contest between two talented teams eventually ended. Full time: St Michael's 16pts Elphin-Ballinameen 14pts.

Under 14 Boys

The under 14 boys sponsored by McGuinness Centra had another busy week in the Division 2 championship. Kilbride were the visitors to Ardcarne Park on Monday evening last. A superb opening quarter from the home team, where they scored 2-5 without reply, set the tone for a convincing performance and they emerged victorious on a final scoreline of St Michael's 4-12 Kilbride 0-6. Three days later the lads made the trip to Ballinlough to take on a strong Eire Og - Michael Glaveys combination. In a keenly contested encounter, the visitors produced a team performance full of skill, determination and character. Another bright start saw them build an early 3 point advantage but this was narrowed to a single point by half-time, 1-5 to 1-4. The second half saw the boys in green and red build on their lead while defending with great resolve. At the final whistle another win had been deservedly secured: St Michael's 2-9 Eire Og - Michael Glaveys 1-6.

Minor Boys

Our minor boys eventually had their first outing in the Division 2 championship on Tuesday last. In miserable wet and windy conditions, the boys competed well against a highly-rated St Ciaran's side. Despite a slow start the lads only trailed by a single point at half-time. The decisive score however was a St Ciaran's goal in the 4th quarter. Full-time: St Michael's 1-6 St Ciaran's 1-12.

*New Covid-19 Restrictions:*

While the new Government restrictions on outdoor sports (banning spectators from games and limiting training to pods of 15 including coaches) are very disappointing from a sporting and social point of view, they serve as a warning that Covid-19 remains a threat to society and that we must continue to maintain all best practice protocols to ensure life is as normal as possible.

One positive is that our players are still allowed to play. To ensure that our games may continue, we ask all club members and supporters to respect the new restrictions banning spectators until Sept 13th. We note that, for underage games, one parent/guardian per player is allowed to attend in a child welfare capacity.

Thanks to all for your support and co-operation.

Under 16 Boys

An unbeaten St Dominic's side were the visitors to Cootehall on Monday evening last to take on our u16 boys sponsored by Ardcarne Garden Centre. The league leaders made a confident start, had 2 goals on the board before the home team got off the mark, and held a 9 point advantage at half-time leading by 3-6 to 1-3. Despite the deficit our boys never dropped their heads. In the 2nd half they seized the initiative, kept the scoreboard ticking over and set up an exciting finish, eventually falling short by just two points. Full time: St Michael's 2-11 St Dominic's 3-10.

On Friday the boys took on a strong St Faithleach's side in Ballyleague. In a tired display with many of the team playing their 4th game in 10 days, the result was rarely in doubt. However our lads never gave up trying and still recorded a respectable score of 1-11 with limited possession.

The under 14 girls had a good win when they travelled to Padraig Pearses last Thursday evening with a score line 6.06 St Michaels/ St Ronans V 2.07 Padraig Pearses.  They play Northern Harps in Ballinameen on Thursday next.

Clann conceded their game to our under 12 girls.  They play St Croans away on Sunday next

Last Friday evening amid glorious sunshine, St. Michaels/St. Ronans Junior Ladies team took to Ardcarne pitch for their final game of the season against St. Dominic’s ll. The first period of the game was an evenly matched affair with both teams exchanging scores. As the game progressed into the second half Dominic’s scored several unanswered points. St. Michaels/St. Ronans rallied strongly and pulled points back but, unfortunately, it proved a feat too far for the team.

Thank you to the Junior ladies Management Paul Duignan, Harry Rynn, Theresa White, Mary Kearns and Márie Ni Dhonnchadha for their dedication and commitment to the girls. The sponsors of the Junior Girls team: Keelan Flynn, Clancy Bar, Francis Clancy AI, Noel McTiernan, Junior Earley,  Mark McDermott of  Curmach Strings and  Kwik Arc Frames.

Under 12

Congratulations to our u12s who recorded another good result against Western Gaels in Frenchpark in Division 2 of the Summer League. Kilbride are the visitors to Ardcarne Park on Saturday next for the final game in the league phase.

Under 14

Our under 14 boys sponsored by McGuinness Centra got their competitive season underway with two games in Division 2 last week. First up was a long trek to Woodmount for a nail-biting encounter with Padraig Pearses. The home team jumped into a 5 point lead in the first quarter. By the time of the water break at the end of the third quarter, the gap was reduced to 2 points and momentum was with the visitors. Unfortunately a 20 minute delay due to an issue with floodlights ended the comeback. The home side had regained their composure when play resumed and pulled away to win by 5 points: Padraig Pearses 2-12 St Michael's 3-4.

Two days later St Aidan's were the visitors to Ardcarne Park for another entertaining contest. The boys trailed by 2 goals in the early minutes but were back on level terms by the first water break and there was little between the sides at half time. The visitors seized control in the third quarter and survived a valiant fight back from the home side to take the spoils at the final whistle. St Michael's 5-7 St Aidan's 6-11.

Our young lads should take many positives from both these games and look forward with confidence to the remainder of the campaign.

The under 16 girls were beaten by a much stronger Kilbride team they play their next game in Ardcarne Park against Castlerea  The under 14 girls were beaten by Kilbride on Thursday they play Padraig Pearses away on Thursday The under 12 girls game ended in a draw against Northern Harps  they play Clann at home next Sunday

Under 12 girls

Our Junior Ladies had their first home Championship game in Ardcarne Park this morning. After a slow start, they rallied well and showed great determination resulting in a competitive, enjoyable game just falling short by 5 points. Well done to all the panel. They play their final game in Ardcarne Park this Friday evening at 7pm.

Under 12 Boys
Our under 12 boys returned to winning ways in Ardcarne Park on Sunday afternoon when they entertained neighbours Shannon Gaels in round 3 of the Division 2 Summer League. In a high tempo game between two talented teams, the sides were level at 5 points apiece at the first water break, after which the home team grabbed the initiative building a  seven point advantage early in the second half. A resurgence by the visitors reduced the lead to just 3 points before the St Michael's lads regained the upper hand in the last quarter to finish victors on a 22-12 scoreline. Next up is a trip to Frenchpark on Saturday 15th August to play Western Gaels.

Under 14 Boys

Good luck to our under 14 boys who start their championship campaign against Padraig Pearses in Woodmount on Tuesday 11th August at 8.15pm. In a busy week, their second game is at home at 7pm on Thursday v St Aidan's.

Under 16 Boys
Our under 16 boys sponsored by Ardcarne Garden Centre made the long journey to Ballyforan on Tuesday night last to play their first competitive game of 2020.
Our young team were stung by a St Aidan's goal in the very first minute and then had to survive a sustained bout of early pressure from the home team before they managed to settle. From then on they played some excellent football and only trailed 1-2 to 4pts at the first water break. The game ebbed and flowed during the 2nd quarter with both defences getting on top as conditions became more difficult in the incessant rain. With the sides level, a goal for the home team just before half-time was a crucial score as they lead by 2-3 to 6pts at the break. Our lads had most of the play in the 3rd quarter but failed to capitalize and the only score was a 3rd goal for the locals. In the final minutes of the game the home side took control and added on a flurry of points and a goal from a penalty with the last kick of the game. Full time: St Aidan's 4-8, St Michael's 6pts.
